Quick & Easy 2 Ingredient Natural Carpet Powder
My husband and I have two cats, and we love them to pieces. I love how cuddly they are, how goofy they are, and the little chirps they make when they want attention. But do not get me wrong: what I do not love is the smell of their litter throughout my house.
We have a Litter Robot, so it keeps the litter box smells from building up as it automatically scoops the kitty waste as soon as they are done using it. This helped to reduce the smell of litter in our house drastically, but for some reason, one place in my house always had a lingering litter scent if you got too close: the carpet. It is as if the scent of cat litter just clings to the fibers in our rugs.
So, I went on a search for the perfect all-natural DIY carpet powder to deodorize and freshen our carpets. I could not believe that the solution involved something that I already had: baking soda! Baking soda is a natural deodorizer, and it took the smell right out of our carpets! And let me tell you: It is so easy!

Equipment & Tools Needed
Storage Container: You need something to store your finished carpet powder in. It’s important that you choose an airtight container that is either amber-colored or opaque to keep the essential oils inside protected from UV rays. Alternatively, you could also simply store it in a cool, dark place.
I love to use these jars around my home, the amber glass matches my cleaning spray bottles, and it just looks so pretty! I also use these for my DIY Wood Polish, as well as for homemade lotions!
Ingredients
Baking Soda: Baking soda is well-known for its odor-fighting properties. It has the ability to absorb and eliminate odors, leaving carpets smelling fresh! It also is a powerful stain remover. Detailed below I explain how you can use this carpet powder to help lift stains out of your rugs, as well, and baking soda is the key ingredient as to why.
Essential Oil(s): An essential oil in your carpet powder is entirely optional, but I have found it works wonders to help keep my rugs smelling fresh! The baking soda helps to eliminate odors, while the essential oil(s) leave a fresh scent behind!
I recommend light scents that will not overwhelm your room. Some of my favorites are lavender, vanilla, and this relaxation blend. I found they help to freshen my room and leave a cozy scent behind!
How to Make & Use Carpet Powder
Mix the Powder: Merely fill a small container with baking soda, and then add 15-20 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice. Close the container and shake it up to disperse the scent throughout the baking soda. Easy as that, it is now ready to use!
To Use: When you go to use the carpet powder, sprinkle the mixture onto your carpet. Let it sit for 1 hour, and then vacuum it up. You will be amazed at how much better your carpets smell!
I have also used this on my couch cushions, and it has worked wonders. It could also be used on pillows, blankets, comforters, mattresses, and any fabric that needs a good freshen-up!
To Fight Non-Greasy Stains: If you have a pesky non-greasy stain on your carpet, generously sprinkle the mixture over the stain. Then, wet a paper towel or wash cloth so that it is damp, but not dripping wet. Lay this over the baking soda. Then, let it sit for at least three hours. Overnight is even better. Then remove the towel and vacuum up the baking soda.
It is recommended to repeat this as many times as necessary until the stain is no longer there.
To Fix Greasy Stains: Merely sprinkle the baking soda over the stain and let it sit overnight to absorb as much of the oil as possible, and then vacuum it up.
