Just three chicks doing what we Love
Wispy Willow Homesteading began in 2023…
Jasmine
I live in Michigan, with my adorable son and wonderful husband. I’ve lived a homesteader/hobby farmer’s life for as long as I can remember, beginning when I was about five years old. Living off of the land, growing veggies in the garden, harvesting wild plants, and studying herbology always interested me. Even as an eight-year-old, running around with my wild plants book, identifying berries, leaves, and trees was some of the best entertainment!
Survival in nature is one of the most valuable things you can learn. You never know when you might need it!
I have a small garden, mostly for greens and tomatoes. I like to keep things simple because my toddler doesn’t! Maybe someday I’ll have a bigger garden and do more canning.
Jessica
Hello! I’m Jessica, one-third of the Wispy Willows Homesteading team! Growing up in the middle of a small town, I never had much exposure to homesteading. I can remember attempting a vegetable garden in the old flower bed behind our garage (the only place my flower-loving mother would let me grow anything as it was likely the worst spot to grow anything in the entire yard!) that was, to say the least, a complete and utter failure.
It wasn’t until I married my husband, Jonathan, and we bought our first tiny house on the outskirts of town that I found myself researching and planning a vegetable garden. As soon as the first tomatoes ripened and I brought fistfuls of green beans into the house nearly every day, I was hooked. Since then, we’ve gotten new jobs and moved to the middle of another small town, but the desire for homesteading hasn’t left. In fact, moving to a busy neighborhood in town has made the desire and passion for homesteading life that much stronger in both of us. We hope to move to a farmhouse in the country in the coming years and fulfill our dreams of having chickens (as they aren’t allowed within our city limits), cows, a garden that could sustain us over the winter with its produce, and so much more.
Right now, we are learning all we can and growing skills that we can use when we get the farmhouse we so desire. I’m excited to be able to share our progress, as well as new recipes and skills that I learn with you, and I hope you are just as excited to come along on this adventure with us!
Meghan
Hey there! I’m Meghan, “Meghan with an H” is how I usually introduce myself when meeting someone, but since you’re reading this, you already know that! Anyway, I grew up in a small town with no interest or care to grow my own food, we just went to the store to get what we needed. Well that all changed once I moved out on my own I started looking more into the products I was purchasing. This was an eye-opener for me as I never knew how many things were unhealthy for us. Moving forward I became more mindful of what I was putting in my body and in my environment around me.
It wasn’t until about 2020 that I started to really get serious about making food from scratch and wanting to live a more “Traditional Wife” role. So with the support of my husband, Rasmus, I decided to leave my full-time job in pursuit of “returning to our roots” and diving deeper into the homesteading lifestyle. Some of my favorite homesteading skills are: cooking from scratch, preservation, and preparedness.
Currently, we’re living in the middle of a small town but have dreams of finding a homestead in the country to give us more freedom and land to be able to dive deeper into the lifestyle we’re striving for. I would love to be able to have a bountiful garden that could sustain our family throughout the year and some chickens, ducks, and quail, maybe even a cow (I love highland cows!) or a few sheep. Even though we don’t have our dream homestead yet, we will continue to learn new skills and grow along the way which will help build the foundation for when we do. I look forward to taking you along for the journey and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
